It's not often
you find a boat yard that actually welcomes "Boaties on a Budget" but that's
exactly how the proprietor of this boat yard, John Bates , markets his
small, yet extremely well equipped facility in Mackay. Situated in North
Mackay, on Vine Creek, MACKAY'S BOAT YARD has been operating for
years, but under John's new management and unprecedented developments in the
area, a change has been seen, from what was once a sleepy little operation
grow into a bustling business with a definite regard for multihull needs.
With a history in mechanical engineering, John bought
the yard 18 months ago, after recognising the need for an affordable boat
yard to cater for the rapidly growing boating community in the region. "...
this place seemed perfect with the potential to provide a top class dry
storage area - a boating place for yachts and powerboats - especially
multis..." he says. "As my yard isn't far from the new Mackay Marina,
boats can sail into the Pioneer River, then up Vine Creek to the ramp. The
creek is tidal but well suited for 'Multis' as well as large 'Monos' and I'm
happy to pilot owners boats in for them if they wish. I'm capable of lifting
20 tonnes with my small travelift and am currently building a purpose-built
trailer equipped to take all Multis."
No less than 11 multis are currently in the four acre yard with everything
from old 'Tris' to brand new 'Cats' enjoying the yard's hospitality and
security-fence enclosed safety. John's delighted to have the opportunity to
check out such a wide variety of designs...." I've always enjoyed sailing
and have sailed numerous Multis over the years, but owning my own boat yard
had always been out of my reach,'" he says "hopefully my time has
come, and having the opportunity to check out so many boats is great."
John genuinely enjoys his business and the enthusiasm carries through to his
regard for good old fashioned service. He offers a wealth of local knowledge
and can recommend reputable suppliers, mechanics, boat builders/repairers,
fibreglassers, spray-painters etc.." Mackay has very good marine services
and shops which provide some of the best work and advice on the central
Queensland coast" he says. As the Mackay agent for International Marine
Paints, you can also benefit from John's "on the spot" advice on
anti-fouling etc., and be sure of prompt delivery! " I concentrate on
giving good, quality service to the boating community. I'm not a high budget
yard and my business is aimed at the average boatie on a budget".
While the yard itself is well organised and laid out, the
atmosphere onsite also makes for an enjoyable work environment. There's an
air of friendly efficiency, with help always on hand, whether advice on
local services or just a lift into town. (Mackay city is just 3 kilometres
away, with regular buses running right out front). The yard is continually
being upgraded with John currently gearing up for the 'longer stayers',
whether for full make-overs, building projects or for just long term
storage. A chandlery is even being set up to provide onsite requirements. "I
plan to provide the best long-term boating facility on the central
Queensland coast." So far.... so good, John.
Live-aboards are welcomed and catered for with clean amenities and even the
odd party. " When I have several 'guests', I arrange barbecues, where
boaties from all over Australia, who are visiting with us, get to know one
another and enjoy a 'coldie' "... Creek pilot, engineer, haul-out
expert, technical adviser, chandler, boating enthusiast, party co-ordinator
and good all round bloke who actually understands mariners needs and that
not all mariners are made of money.... What more could you want in a yard
manager!
John Bates is definitely achieving his goal to make Mackay's Boat Yard,
one of the best little yards in the region.
It's already a favourite
haven for "in the know" Multis who've discovered an efficiently operated,
dry-stand facility where 'haul-out' doesn't mean a haul out of your
'budgeted' boatie bank balance! ---- by
